Porn Star Martini History & Culture
Oh my, did I ever think starting a cocktail site would have me writing about the cultural significance of something that starts with “porn star”… no, and I’m sure I’m going to hear about it at Easter this year…
The Porn Star Martini was invited in 2002 by bartender Douglas Ankrah at the Townhouse Bar in Knightsbridge, London. It emerged during the early-2000s London cocktail renaissance, a period obsessed with bold flavors, theatrical presentation and drinks that felt a little provocative. (This was the era of embarrassingly ordering “blow job shots” and “Sex on the Beach” for my fellow millennials.)
Ankrah originally called it the “Maverick Martini,” named after a nearby gentleman’s club. The drink quickly gained popularity, but the original name did not capture the playful shock value he wanted, so it was changed to the current moniker. Ankrah has said the name was meant to suggest “a drink a pornstar would order.”

Passion Fruit Martini INGREDIENTS
Here’s everything you’ll need to make this yummy Aperol Spritz. See the recipe card down below for exact measurements.
- Vanilla Vodka – splurge, it adds an essential vanilla flavor that can’t be recaptured by adding vanilla extract to plain vodka (but don’t worry, even cheap vanilla vodka works)
- Passoa (Passion fruit liqueur) – a great addition, but if you can’t find it, just balance out the cocktail with a bit more passion fruit juice or puree
- Pineapple Juice – not only does this enhance the tropical flavor, it helps give the passion fruit martini it’s distinctive foam without using egg whites
- Passion Fruit Puree – if you can’t find it, puree frozen or fresh passion fruit to make your own
- Passion Fruit Syrup – use vanilla syrup if too sweet and tropical (or in a pinch)
- Lime Juice
- Prosecco – any dry/brut sparkling wine works for this sidecar
Optional Garnish: Halved Passion Fruit.
Substituions or Variations
Passion Fruit Martinis are as versatile as you want it. This inherently naughty cocktail begs for you to break the rules – after all, it’s named after rule breakers:
- Add the Prosecco directly to the martini for a more simplified and easier sipping experience and skip on the sidecar shot glasses.
- Can’t find passion fruit puree? Grab some frozen or fresh passion fruit and puree it for this recipe or use Pineapple Juice or Puree
- Sweeten with honey if you find this cocktail too tart.
- Swap the vodka for gin if you prefer it’s floral notes in martinis.
- Add some kick with a slice of fresh ginger or a couple slices of jalapeños in the shaker.
- Coconut rum is a tropical twist that deviates from the martini recipe but adds flavor, if you prefer rum-based drinks.

HOW TO MAKE PASSION FRUIT MARTINI
- Chill a martini glass in the freezer or by filling it with ice while you prepare the drink.
- Using a cocktail shaker, shake vanilla vodka, Passoã, passion fruit purée, passionfruit syrup, pineapple juice, and lime juice with ice for 15–20 seconds until cold and frothy.
- Strain the cocktail into the chilled martini glass and garnish with half a passionfruit, flesh side up.
- Serve with a 1 oz shot of prosecco on the side.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- For the ripest passion fruits, opt for wrinkly, deep purple fruits – smooth or green ones will be unpleasantly sour. In a pinch, skip the fresh garnish and use frozen passion fruit for the recipe.
- Chill your martini glasses in advance – martinis are always best enjoyed ice cold and a cold glass will help, especially since a good martini never contains ice!
- Strain out the passion fruit seeds if using fresh to ensure a smooth, velvety sipping experience.
- Give it a dry shake – shake this cocktail without ice and then shake with ice. The dry shake invigorates the ingredients and get that luscious foamy layer on top. The second shake with ice chills the drink.
- Double strain if you feel like the passion fruit puree needs it.
