Strawberry Mojito History & Culture
Mojitos originated as a medicinal tonic in 16th-century Cuba as a remedy against scurvy and dysentery, blending native mint, lime, sugarcane juice and aguardiente (early rum). Theories link it to Sir Francis Drake’s “El Draque” crew tonic or enslaved sugarcane workers’ guarapo drink.
By the 20th century, refined rum and soda elevated it to a Havana bar staple, made popular in North America by Ernest Hemingway, who patroned La Bodeguita del Medio, and symbolizing Cuban resilience and nightlife.
However, the fruit-forward fusion of Strawberry Mojitos came from Peru; the post-1959 Cuban Revolution diaspora brought the mojito with them to Peru, which embraced the drink and infused it with locally available fruits – from strawberries to passion fruit (mojito de maracuyá) and even grapefruit (mojito de toronja).

Strawberry Mojito Ingredients
Here’s everything you’ll need to make this easy Strawberry Mojito. See the recipe card down below for exact measurements.
- Strawberries, sliced – fresh or frozen both work for this recipe
- Simple syrup – you can use granulated white sugar, if desired
- White rum
- Mint leaves – fresh only! Do not use dried mint or mint extract – skip this ingredient if you can’t find fresh mint
- Lemon-Lime Soda – we use Diet Sprite, but full-sugar or 7-Up works as well
- Lime juice – fresh is best, if using bottled opt for real lime juice without additives
Optional Garnish: Additional fresh strawberry slices, lime wedges and mint sprigs.
Substituions or Variations
We’re already playing with a classic, so don’t feel timid making this recipe your own with a few smart swaps:
- Ginger twist – Use ginger beer (or ginger ale if you’re shy) to add a spicy kick in place of the lemon-lime soda
- Sparkling water, tonic water or other neutral spritzes add fizziness to the drink without added sweetness
- Lime-Sugar Rim – zest some fresh limes into sugar, run a lime wedge along the edge of the glass and then dip in the lime zest-sugar mixture for a sweet and tangy sugar rim
- Swap out the strawberries for blueberries, blackberries or raspberries for a fruity twist
- White sugar is traditionally used in mojitos (not simple syrup as ours calls for) – however, simple syrup does blend easier if you have it on hand
(I do not recommend swapping the light rum for dark rum in this recipe, as dark rum’s oak aging imparts caramel, vanilla, spice and molasses flavors that will dominate the delicate fruits and herbs of our strwaberry mojito, muddying its essential crisp, citrusy balance.)

HOW TO MAKE STRAWBERRY MOJITO
- Using a muddler, muddle 3 sliced strawberries and simple syrup in a large highball glass (15oz) to release the juices. (Muddling is a technique used to gently mash herbs and/or fruit to release the essence or juices.)
- Clap the mint together in your hands to release the scent (you’ll know it’s worked when your hands smell minty!). And add the leaves to the glass.
- Add in 2 oz rum and 1 oz lime juice, and stir to combine. Then fill your glass with ice.
- Top with lemon-lime soda until filled.
- Garnish with extra strawberries, mint and lime wheels. Enjoy!

TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- The riper the strawberries, the better! The cocktail will be super flavorful and vibrant. Pick strawberries that are fully ruby red from tip to stem under the hull, firm yet plump, and emit a sweet floral aroma for peak juiciness
- To experiment, choose whichever berry or fruit you love, then follow the rest of the recipe. You can choose mango, pineapple, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, passionfruit, etc.
- Avoid over-muddling the mint. You want to gently encourage them to release their flavor but you don’t want the mint leave to tear and add unwanted leafiness to the drink.
