Tips for Turquoise Perfection
-
To achieve the perfect turquoise hue, balance the Blue Curaçao with the cream of coconut and coconut syrup. Too much Curaçao will turn the drink deep blue; too little will make it pale.
-
For added creaminess, you can blend in 1-2 tbsp of heavy cream or coconut milk.
RECIPE FAQ’S
Blue Hawaiian Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use coconut milk instead of cream of coconut?
A: Yes, but the cream of coconut is sweeter and creates a creamier texture.
Q: Is there a substitute for blue curaçao?
A: You can use blue food coloring with triple sec as a substitute, but it may slightly alter the flavor.
Q: What type of rum is best for a Blue Hawaiian?
A: Light or white rum is recommended for its mild flavor.
Q: Can I make a non-alcoholic version of a Blue Hawaiian?
A: Yes, replace the rum with coconut water or a splash of soda, and the blue curaçao with blue fruit syrup.
Q: Should the drink be blended or served over ice?
A: It can be made either way. Blend it for a frozen cocktail or mix ingredients and serve it over crushed ice.
Q: Do I need a shaker to make a Blue Hawaiian?
A: No, you can mix this in a blender.
Q: What’s the garnish for a Blue Hawaiian?
A: Popular garnishes include a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, lime wheel, and a cocktail umbrella. Here I also used a dehydrated pineapple slice for the pineapple flower.
Q: Can I use fresh pineapple juice instead of bottled?
A: Absolutely! Fresh pineapple juice enhances the flavor and adds freshness to the drink.
Q: How can I make the drink less sweet?
A: Use less pineapple juice or reduce the amount of cream of coconut. Or you can omit the coconut syrup.
Q: Can I add more alcohol to the Blue Hawaiian?
A: Yes, you can add a splash of coconut rum or increase the amount of light rum for a stronger drink.
Q: What if I don’t have a blender for the frozen version?
A: You can crush the ice manually in a bag with a rolling pin and stir the drink in a glass.
Q: Can I add sparkling water to the drink?
A: Yes, a splash of sparkling water or soda adds effervescence and makes it lighter.
Q: Can this be served as a pitcher cocktail?
A: Yes, multiply the recipe by the number of servings you need and mix it in a pitcher. Add ice when serving.
Q: Why isn’t my drink as blue as I expected?
A: The yellow tint of pineapple juice may dull the blue color. Add more blue curaçao or a drop of blue food coloring.
Q: My drink is too strong. What should I do?
A: Add more pineapple juice or cream of coconut to balance the alcohol content.
Q: The drink is too thick when blended. How can I fix it?
A: Add more pineapple juice or water to thin it out.
Q: How do I prevent my blended drink from melting quickly?
A: Serve in a pre-chilled glass and blend with ice cubes straight from the freezer.
Q: Can I make this drink ahead of time?
A: It’s best served fresh, but you can pre-mix the liquid ingredients and refrigerate them, blending or adding ice when ready to serve.
