HOW TO MAKE PINA COLADA
This recipe doesn’t require a blender, as we are using pineapple juice instead of frozen pineapple.
Add pineapple juice, coconut milk, cream of coconut and white coconut rum to a shaker.
Shake well around 30-40 seconds.
Taste the mixture and adjust the flavors as necessary.
Add ice to a glass and pour into this glass, add garnish and serve immediately.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
-
Use a white rum in this recipe to make the best pina coladas. Aged rum will be stronger in flavor and may overpower the pineapple flavor. Do not use any spiced rum options.
-
If you prefer piña coladas with a stronger pineapple flavor, or for it to be more coconut-forward, and in the shaking process, you can easily adjust the preferences.
-
Get creative with your garnished to make it extremely cute – add Maraschino cherries, pineapple wedges, cocktail umbrellas, etc.
RECIPE FAQ’S
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COCONUT MILK AND CREAM OF COCONUT?
A. Coconut milk is sold in a can or as a nut milk. If you buy a canned coconut milk, and it’s opened, there is often a more liquid portion on the bottom and thicker, creamier part on top. Before using the canned coconut milk, you should mix in the creamy, thick layer until the coconut milk has a smooth consistency. You can also choose a nut milk coconut milk to make it easier (as in this recipe).
Cream of Coconut is made by taking the top layer that forms over coconut milk and processing it. Then the sweeteners are added to make it as a thick syrup that is mostly used in piña coladas.
This recipe requires both – coconut milk and cream of coconut, as we are using a packaged coconut milk (and it is less sweet).
Q. WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE THE CREAM OF COCONUT?
A. If you don’t have the cream of coconut in hand, you can omit the ingredient and only use canned coconut milk. Don’t use the packaged nut milk version of coconut milk in this case.
Q. What Alcohol Is Used in Piña Coladas?
A. To make this cocktail, you need to specifically use a white rum. Such as, Malibu coconut rum, classic Bacardi rum or flavored coconut Bacardi rum. White rum has a lighter flavor because it hasn’t been aged.
Q. HOW CAN I MAKE A VIRGIN PINA COLADA?
A. Simply omit the white rum to make a non-alcoholic version. You can also use frozen pineapple chunks, and blend it together with coconut milk, and cream of coconut. You can also use a non-alcoholic spirit instead of the white rum.
Q. CAN I USE MALIBU COCONUT RUM IN THIS RECIPE?
A. Absolutely! You can choose whichever white rum works for you – Malibu coconut rum, classic white Bacardi, coconut flavored Bacardi or any other white rum.
q. Can I Double or Triple this drink?
A. Sure! If you want to make these for several people you can easily double or triple the recipe.
